The ultimate playbook for what it means to be Angela! This is my world of philosophy.

At my core, I love creating. For some time, that meant art, then games, then robots, and now code and food sometimes.

I think the beautiful part about building is that you get to put a piece of you in every creation. Every product decision, every small UI/UX consideration, every implementation detail comes from this long lineage of your personally lived experiences. And a lot of the times, there are very unique considerations you thought about when making those small decisions.

Like the color pink! Pink actually isn't my favourite color -- although this whole site is pink, my laptop and vscode is pink themed -- my favourite color is purple. And if you asked me why the color pink, I'd have a pretty deep -- I think -- answer to tell you ๐Ÿ‘€

That's what makes building so fun! All these small bits and pieces come together into a whole, that represent you as a person, regardless if your name is stamped on top of it :)

Hello World!

I first started "coding" in grade 5 when my mom enrolled me in some online Chinese Scratch course. I really liked making games! Then in grade 10 & 11, I learned Java in high school CS class and made even cooler games. TBH I loved playing games just as much haha

In grade 11, I joined my high school's VEX robotics team and absolutely FELL IN LOVEEE with building robots. I have a distinct memory of staying up until 5am the night before a competition to work on the robot, only to oversleep my alarm the next morning :')

My co-captain was actually much more of a coder than me. But naturally, I chose Mechatronics Engineering when university acceptances came around.

Side note here, I actually couldn't choose between Computer Engineering vs. Tron. The tipping point for me was because I liked Waterloo campus better LMAO

In my first 4 months of university, I was instantly humbled by the job search. Luckily, I ended up getting an offer to Ericsson towards the end of the term (shoutout)! I learned lots about Docker, Kubernetes, you know... But the best part of the job was simply coding. I loved just being able to code.

Thankfully 95% of this job was AI-less so I actually coded, unlike now...

This is also when I decided to start my social media account! Becoming an influencer was always a childhood dream and living away from friends removed that fear of judgement of being cringe. So finally, for the first time, I seriously started on TikTok and Instagram. Read more here!

The next 4 months of studying went by really quickly, with me landing a Shopify by a pure stroke of luck. I totally applied on a whim, but taking that offer might be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I coded some more. I learned from INSANE 10x engineers on my team. I made friends who genuinely inspired me like never before. I challenged myself with crazy lore building activities. Everyday, I grew, I learned, and I was inspired. Read more here!

So I decided to transfer to Computer Engineering for a tad bit more specialization in SWE! Why UW CE? Um yeah because someone really convinced me they enjoyed the program, and I was like yeah let's do it! Anyways, I'm currently going through the thick of it with Computer Engineering T^T

'Twas my origin story, thanks for reading!

AGENTS.md

  • Celebrate every small win: Life is built on compounded results and rome wasn't built overnight.
  • Do it for the love of the game: Results are cool but it's much cooler to love what you do ;)
  • Love life: Only 1 life, so might as well love every bit of it. Some arcs are just a little harder than others.
  • "Am", not "was", not "will be": Pretty flowers were never meant to last :)
  • Be unexpected and dangerous: Life's not fun without a little surprise!
  • Enough: Everything is enough. Life now is enough and is perfect.
  • Effort is the prize: Participation for the win! Luck is always a factor, just keep showing up and learn.

As I'm now in second year, I realized I know myself much less than I thought I did. And for a month or two, I genuinely didn't know who I was or what I believed in. Even now, I'm unsure if what I believe in is real, or just something I enforced upon myself out of necessity. I do believe in my core values, but at the end of the day, I'm unsure how much of it I actually follow.

Like even though I'm thankful for my life now, I'm always wanting more. I think part of it is the Waterloo mindset, and I just have insane FOMO.

So yeah, sometimes I do wonder... what is my purpose and why do I do the things I do. I'd like to say that I just love building. I love success, and the feeling of eyes on that win. But we all know that's probably not true. It's the external validation that gets me going, even if it's just a little bit.

But in 10 years, I want to quit tech. Quit corporate (but still code on the side). I want to become a waitress, be a bartender, go to culinary school, and work on a line. I'd want to work all my life, but have the option to quit at any time. Who knows, maybe this is all subject to change on just a whim :P

Authenticity is fake. Cycle of authenticity vs. theatricality

There is no selfless action. We consider selflessness something that also happens to help someone else.
